LA MÉMOIRE

Malérargues is the repository for a vast paper, audio, visual, and digital archive, representing over a century of research, study and practice of the extended human voice. In 2008 and 2009 “La Mémoire” – the archives room in Malérargues – was created by Roy Hart Theatre founder members Paul and Clara Silber, who curated it until their departure from Malérargues in 2018.

La Mémoire houses the archival and intellectual legacy of Alfred Wolfsohn, Roy Hart, and the Roy Hart Theatre, as well as numerous documents and audiovisual recordings that trace the history of the Roy Hart Voice Centre since its inception as the Roy Hart International Artistic Centre in 1992. In addition, La Mémoire contains a huge body of photographic work, consisting of thousands of images, produced over the past fifty years by Roy Hart Theatre founder member Ivan Midderigh and several other company photographers.

La Mémoire also serves as a library of the many books and academic articles that have been written by the members of the Roy Hart Theatre and successive generations of practitioners of the human voice without boundaries. The archive is available for consultation by students, teachers, and researchers, upon request.

This archival heritage is currently the focus of an ambitious preservation and digitization project, in order to protect and preserve the paper, audio, and visual material in the archive and make it more widely and securely available for consultation.

The Roy Hart Theatre archive is the tangible record of an extraordinary story. It constitutes a vast amount of material, dating from the childhood of Alfred Wolfsohn – who pioneered the voice work that inspired the Roy Hart Theatre – up to the present time: a history of over a century.

The story of the vocal exploration which was later to become known as the Roy Hart Theatre is a fascinating one. Although the company was formed in 1969,  the human voice was the essence of the explorations underway for many years by this group of people whose groundbreaking work would gain worldwide recognition.

By its very nature, the Roy Hart Theatre archive is an ongoing project, documenting and making accessible a story and a legacy that continue to unfold.

Your donation will help ensure this work continues.
