MALÉRARGUES

For half a century, Malérargues has been a place where voices, art and humanity meet.

It is a unique place of creation, transmission and community.

Here, artists, students, educators and researchers from all over the world live and create together, exploring unique approaches to developing the human voice in the tradition of Alfred Wolfsohn, Roy Hart and the Roy Hart Theatre.

The Malérargues Endowment Fund was established to acquire, preserve and develop the Malérargues estate as a protected site where people can continue to work on the embodied voice, imagination and soul. Our mission is to ensure the perpetuity of the cultural, educational and artistic legacy of Wolfsohn, Hart and the Roy Hart Theatre.

Why Malérargues matters

Malérargues represents a history of over a hundred years of research, study and practice of the human voice without boundaries.

Deep in the Cévennes hills of southern France, the Château de Malérargues, like the region, is renowned for its spirit of independence. The Cévennes were at the heart of Camisard resistance to religious repression and persecution under Louis XIV. On the façade of the château, a plaque honours the memory of Robert Francisque, a local member of the French Resistance during the Second World War, who was involved in numerous sabotage operations and was shot by the Nazis.

Our voice work echoes Malérargues’ historical spirit of independence. Since the Roy Hart Theatre company took up residence there in 1974, it has been a sanctuary for exploration of the human voice in its multiple and creative dimensions, a unique meeting place for art, research and personal transformation.

Passion for this unique place, alive with stories, history and human dreams, is at the heart of the Malérargues Endowment Fund’s mission to ensure that this extraordinary heritage remains vibrant and accessible for generations to come.

In 1974, a group of artists made an extraordinary act of faith — they purchased a château in France to live and create together and give their work a permanent home. Fifty years later, the Malérargues Endowment Fund exists to honour that vision and carry it forward — ensuring that what the founding members of the Roy Hart Theatre built together can never be lost, divided or taken from the community they created.
